Heating and Air Help
6 Helpful Tips
1. A dirty air filter can cause many problems due to restricted air flow. Change or clean your air filter regularly. If the fan is set to auto, most 1” filters last 3 months max. If you operate the fan/blower constantly the air filter will get dirty much faster. Change every 4 to 6 weeks.
2. Keep bushes, shrubs and weeds from growing to close to the outside unit (Condensing unit/Heat Pump). At least a 1 foot clearance should be maintained on all sides with no restriction above the unit
3. Hose off the outside coil carefully. Strong jet spray can bend the coil fins and restrict airflow. In the A/C mode heat from inside your house is being rejected outside. The refrigerant is the medium used to transfer the heat. “It is cool science!”
4. Many thermostats from home improvement stores installed by the homeowner operate on AA or AAA batteries. If your system is not working right check the thermostat batteries, most have a low battery icon in the display. I prefer to hard wire thermostats whenever possible to operate off of the furnace control voltage. Batteries then are nice just to maintain the proper time during a power outage.
5. If your system is not working at all check the circuit breakers. Remember, the furnace and the A/C or HP are on separate circuit breakers in most installations. Be very careful with Electric furnaces. It is very common for an electric furnace to have more than one 230 volt circuit breaker supplying the furnace. Also, look for a switch located near the furnace. Sometimes these power switches are located low on the side of the furnace where a child could turn it off or it could be bump and turned off. Also, the front panels on some furnaces can come loose and prevent the system from operating. Door /Panel switches prevent the furnace from operating when the door/panel is removed. Make sure the door is attached properly.
6. If the A/C system ices up. Turn the A/C off. It can take several hours for the system to thaw out. The most common reason units will ice up is if the air filter is very dirty or if the system is low on refrigerant or both. In most cases, a service call will be necessary. As the system thaws water may leak out and around the furnace. Keep the system off until Big Walnut Heating & Cooling arrives.
